The History of the Block Island Lighthouses / Block Island ~ In 1872, a merchant named Nicholas Ball petitioned the Lighthouse Board, remarking on the dangers of the Block Island coast. With vessels from up and down the East Coast, passing the island, the Board agreed and built the second lighthouse on Mohegan Bluffs, awarding $75,000 for the construction and naming it a primary seacoast light.

Lighthouses - Block Island RI - Where to Visit ~ Accessibility: Block Island is accessible via ferry from Point Judith, Rhode Island, New London, Connecticut, and Montauk, New York. The lighthouse is a long walk from the ferry terminal; a car or bicycle is recommended or you can hire a taxi. Reaching the lighthouse requires walking for about 20 minutes from the parking area on a sandy beach.

North Lighthouse opens for 25th year / Block Island ~ Block Island's North Lighthouse is marking a double anniversary in 2018. The fourth-order Fresnel lens in the iconic structure at Sandy Point was first illuminated 150 years ago, on Sept. 15, 1868; and the maritime Interpretive Center on its ground floor first opened to the public 25 years ago, in July, 1993.

Downie in his book, Block IslandâThe Sea, the blocks were delivered to Block Island by a schooner, placed on skids, and hauled by oxen to Sandy Point. The new light was illuminated for the first time on September 15, 1868, with a fourth-order Fresnel lens showing a fixed white light, 61 feet above sea level.

Tynan upon a foundation of granite blocks. The Southeast Lighthouse sits on cliffs called the Mohegan Bluffs, and years of erosion meant that by the 1990s, the tower was a mere 55 feet from the edge (down from 300).
Block Island North Lighthouse, Rhode Island at ~ Congress provided $5,500 on March 2, 1829 for a lighthouse on the northwest point of the island, and later that year, the first Block Island North Lighthouse commenced operation. Unfortunately, the extremely unstable sand and gravel on the point were prone to rapid erosion, and the lighthouse was swept out to sea after just a few years.
